One man's odyssey in home remodelingWhen we bought our current house we knew we didn't like the kitchen. I also knew that I could fix and make it better. I had no idea what I was getting myself into. The main living space in the house is a roughly 30' by 20' great room. It's got a vaulted ceiling, big fireplace and space for a living room, dining room and the kitchen. The problem is that it was a 1970's design: the kitchen had a false wall dividing the great room and providing space for some upper cabinets. It really broke up the space and was just plain ugly. Our first Christmas in the house we had a huge dinner with my folks and both my brothers and their families. My wife hadn't liked the false wall in the kitchen even before buying the house, and shortly before Christmas she'd had enough. So, I cut it down. One week before Christmas. I'm not sure who's more nuts: my wife for letting me do it a week before Christmas, or me for actually doing so. Fast forward a year and a half and we've had enough of our crappy kitchen, it's time to remodel. The question is, how? This is our story.
