One more weekend and more progress. I spent time building a couple of walls and putting up one of the garage headers.
I still need to get the lvl header for the single garage, but I did get the double header up. The rest of the time was spent building walls on the new floor.
The old garage roof is still on so I can't raise the walls yet, but I can build them. As you can see from the pics I've got two walls ready. One more wall to go and we're ready to build the new structure.
The first wall is the wall on the East side of the kitchen which will be a load bearing wall for the new roof. It was pretty simple and only had one opening in it for a window. The second wall is the end wall, or rake wall. This one was a little tricky since I had to assemble it on top of the first, and it's got a slope at the top of the wall that will become the gable end of the roof. To keep the ends aligned I made a jig to hold the studs at 16 inches on center. The bottom I lined up with the sill plate. The trick now was to match the slope of the trusses. The trusses only span 14 feet, so the simple solution is to grab a truss, measure their position on the wall and mark a layout line by tracing the truss. Remember to mark off for the double top plates and problem solved. Let's hope I calculated right! |
