So, what are our options for a new kitchen?  Were limited by the position of our house on the lot.

Legally, there are setback limits that apply.  Any side of the house that faces the street must be 30 feet from the edge of the lot.  As you can see in the picture above, the North and East side face streets.  There's room on the North side, but the house is on the 30 foot line to the East. The back yard setback is also 30 feet, which we're already at.  The side yard setback is 10 feet, which applies to the West side of the house, which we're also already at the legal limit.

The easy choice would be to expand to the north side of the house.  However, that presents several problems.   We'll get to that next time.
